Treatment
of waste oil
In the city of Kalundborg, Denmark, Dansk Olie Genbrug A/S
has invested in a waste-oil processing plant (the Vaxon system)
with a capacity of 35,000 tonnes per year. When the waste-oil
is pumped through the system, an ongoing refining process
removes impurities. The finished product is a high-quality
petroleum which may be used in all furnaces without problems.
The plant is expanding further to permit the production of
base oils (i.e. the base component of lubrication oils), which
represents a real improvement for the environment. That is
because the actual recycling of lubrication oils, rather than
simply processing waste oil into fuel, is more in keeping
with sound environmental principles. The underlying environmental-political
principles can be studied in the 1997 discussion paper on
industrial waste issued by the National Agency of Environmental
Protection.
Apart from the Kalundborg processing plant, Dansk Olie Genbrug
A/S operates a plant in the city of Horsens (earlier Østjydsk
Oliedepot), a tank plant in Struer, and a tank plant in Kalundborg
with direct loading facilities for ships. |

Sale
of the treated waste oil
Based on tradition and government legislation, most of today’s
waste oil is treated for the purpose of being sold to district
heating plants.Treated waste oil is sold to approximately
30 district heating plants. Total oil sales for this purpose
amounted to 19,000 tonnes (metric tons) in 1997. |
